Across the country bullying rates have significantly increased. What causes  people to bully and them to act out during middle/high school? How can the teacher help prevent this from occurring? So what is bullyingThe causes of bullying could be a millions of reasons like an unstable homelife, jealousy,  physical appearance and insecurityWhat  I mean by an unstable home life is the student feels neglected, or absences of emotional support and unpredictability. Which causes him to act out, during crucial class learning time. Also they tend to bully others to act “cool” around other classmates.

Bullying is realistically alway going to appear in every high school, but the problem is how can we limit the actions. According to “National Center for Education Statistics, 2022” one out five kids get bullied. That gets reported. In my previous experience in middle school I've gotten bullied where the teacher needed to step and take action and discipline the  student and give them detention, and ISS. He would call me names like 4 eyes, weirdo, pimple head etc. He would seek out to make fun of me every chance he could get to act cool around his friends. So how can we prevent bullying?

There are a few ways we limit bullying. One way is we could implement a yearly program to further the students' education about bullying. Another way is the teacher having policies in their classroom that prevents them from trying to bully. For example, a few of my previous teachers would always say at the beginning of the class “ if you don’t have anything nice to say dont say it.” which I believe 90% of the time it worked. While other teachers would give the perpetrator a slap on the wrist and tell them not to do it again.

The question is what is the bully's motive for bullying? Bullying is a serious issue that affects people of all ages, especially in school environments. Understanding the reasons behind bullying can help prevent it and create safer, more supportive communities. While each person’s actions are different, there are several similar  reasons why they engage in bullying behavior.

According to  BetterHelp,   One of the main causes of bullying is insecurity. Many bullies struggle with their own self-esteem and confidence. They may feel powerless or unhappy in their own lives and try to gain a sense of control by targeting others. By making someone else feel small, they attempt to make themselves feel stronger or more important.

Another example why people get bullied is their homelife. As stated by MSWDegrees, Many children who bully come from unstable or restrictive home environments. This can range from uncertain situations, like recent divorces, to abuse or neglect, to having overly strict parents. These don’t necessarily need to be recent. If a child’s parents bully them or others—like store employees or other family members—the kids may learn this behavior and assume it’s acceptable. They may also have older siblings who bully them, and they adopt the behavior—especially if the older child doesn’t seem to suffer consequences.

Other parental behaviors may also contribute. If a parent abuses drugs or alcohol, a child may be more likely to engage in bullying. However, parents who monitor their child’s every movement and significantly restrict what they can do could also find themselves with a  child accused of bullying. Both situations can make kids feel like they have little control over their lives. Kids with unstable home lives often feel helpless, and bullying behaviors are a way to seek power. In fact, bullying behaviors could be an unconscious cry for help. While kids may act like they don’t care about what they did or understand it’s wrong, it doesn’t mean they aren’t hurting.

My last example of why teenagers bully is their physical appearance.  As noted by SafeguardNetworking, physical bullying is associated with hitting, kicking, tripping or the destruction of a person’s property. Physical bullying not only affects the bully and the victim, but also may have an impact on innocent bystanders. Many bullies pick on others who look differ from one another,   because they believe it makes them appear more powerful or socially dominant. For example, students who don’t fit conventional beauty standards or who have unique physical traits may be mocked or excluded by their peers.Young people are constantly exposed to unrealistic beauty standards online, which can lead to harmful comparisons. When someone doesn't match those ideals, they may become a target. This is especially true for individuals who are overweight, have acne, or wear certain clothing styles, as bullies often use these differences as reasons to tease or humiliate them.To address this issue, schools and communities must promote acceptance and body positivity. Education about diversity in appearance, open conversations about self-worth.

In conclusion, bullying in middle and high schools is a serious issue that stems from a variety of causes, including unstable home lives, insecurity, and physical appearance. These factors can lead students to act out and harm others as a way to cope with their own struggles. While bullying may never fully disappear, it can be significantly reduced through consistent teacher involvement, strong classroom policies, and school-wide education programs. By promoting acceptance, and holding students accountable for their actions, educators can create a safer and more respectful environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive.
